Cookeville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,825 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro metropolitan area. Cookeville was platted in 1881 by John Cooke and named after his father, Cookeville Township being organized that year. The original town site straddled what is now Greeneville Avenue and Elk Street and included present day downtown Cookeville as well as the unincorporated community of White Sands. A post office was established at Cookeville in 1887, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1907, the first school opened up in what is now downtown Cookeville with six students. Coal mining played an important role in early Cookevilian history with many small mines dotting the landscape and some still extant today including Old Cooley Mines #4 & 5 on Elm Street just south of I-565 exit 169A/US 70 exit 4). In 1916 coal mining ceased operations completely when Pickwick Mines went out of business; however, other industries soon arose such as chemical production and light manufacturing which continue to this day. The ravages of World War II damaged much of Knox County but not Cookeville; only one home was destroyed by fire during this time period which fortunately did not result in any loss or damage to property within city limits! After the war ended came a slow growth period for most parts of Tennessee due to lack of population replacement opportunities following military withdrawal from our state; however Downtown Cookeville experienced significant renovation over ensuing years culminating with a full federal restoration project completed in 1998-2000 that brought about revived retail/commercial district center businesses along Broadway between 7th Ave S&S & 9th Ave S&S., new library building addition on Main St east side next to First Baptist Church (& associated retail properties), restoringoriginal central parkland including paths through Glasgow Gulch & Higginbotham Fork Ravines thru former coal workings - all while making major infrastructure investments like reconstructed water mains enterprising folks refer to as "The greenway" now popularly known as "Greenway Park". etc etc...Today Downtown CookeVILLE has evolved into one OF THE top growing areas IN TN FOR Commercial Properties—In fact according to recent reports…. less than 1% OF ALL COMMERCIAL Properties ARE LOCATED IN THE PAST 10 YEARS IN DOWNTOWN COVETTEVILLE!!! So MUCH FOR "Rural America"really??? In 1875, coalmining began operations in Cookeville, which created major job opportunities for locals. The economy soon recovered thanks to this new industry! Today, Cookeville is still a vibrant community with strong ties to its history and culture!
