Cookeville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1873 by General George Witherspoon Cooke and his family. The population was 1,530 at the 2010 census. Cookeville is located near the confluence of the River Cumberland and the Creek beds which form the eastern edge of Hardin County. The first settlers in this area were members of the Knox–Stewart Party, which arrived on July 4, 1794, during the Louisiana Purchase from France. General George Washington commanded that party and led its escort when it set out from Virginia for what would be known as the Great Trail of Tears. In 1817, General John Jumper transferred 5 sections of land to Hardin County including Cookeville. In 1830, Colonel James Hartsfield donated 640 acres (25 km²) to create a new county seat at Cookeville. The land was named after General George Armstrong Custer's father-in-law Major Adam Weishaupt who had fought at Buena Vista during America's War with Spain in 1812. A post office called "Creek Bottom" was established in 1836; it continued until 1861 when it was moved to "Hardin City". The name change came about because Forked River State Park now extends into Hardin County acrossthe creek just south of downtown Cookeville (the park includes most of present day Cookeville). In 1840 Chief Whiterock gave ownershipof one hundred acres (40 ha) northeast of present day downtown Cookeville to Drury & Storey for an Academy and School House thereon; this property became part of Partick Forest Preserve after Drury's death in 1845. A road leading east from Indianola crossed Hickory Branch just southeastofpresentdayDowntownCookevillewitnessingabridge constructionfortheFirstTimeInTennesseeandbecameknownasHickory Branch Road! The first post office here opened on October 15th 1840 under the name "Indianola". On November 8th 1850 a new post office called "Hardin City"wasestablishedwith James Fenton as Postmaster replacing Whiterock who had died two weeks earlier while travelingwestward on horseback to Nashville with mail he had ordered from Philadelphia! On December 24th 1860 Coal mine explosion occurred here that destroyed both buildings within minutes leaving many dead or injured! One account claims that “an avalanche”then swept away all but three people caught inside before rescue could arrive! On January 25th 1861 Coal Mine Explosion again destructive destroying both buildings within minutes resulting in loss Of Life And extensive Damage To Property!! This event is still commemorated yearly with a special event honoring those lost anniversary each year !!
