The Gun Targets Museum in Cookeville, Tennessee is one of the most important museums in the United States for gun history. The museum has a collection of over 150 guns, including pistols, rifles and shotguns. The museum also has an exhibit on firearms safety. The museum was founded in 1984 by Rick Smith.

Cookeville is a small town located in Sevier County, Tennessee. It was founded in 1855 by James Cooke and his family. The population of Cookeville increased from 2,500 to over 10,000 during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the town's residents were founders of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The TVA is one of America's most famous engineering feats and played an important role in developing the area around Cookeville. Today, Cookeville remains a vibrant community with many businesses and services available.

In Cookeville, Tennessee, the history of the city goes back to 1819 when a group of Knoxvillians founded the town on the banks of the Cumberland River. The name “Cookeville” was derived from a place called Cooley in Ireland. The first settler in Cookeville was John Cooke. In 1823, Isaac Asbury arrived and established a small trading post near what is now downtown Cookeville. A year later, Asbury built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street. By 1830, many other settlers had arrived in Cookeville and began to build homes. It wasn’t until 1850 that Nashville businessman James Fenton bought land in what is now downtown Cookeville and developed it into an area with shops and businesses. In 1853, Fenton donated land for the town’s first schoolhouse which served as the basis for present-day Cookeville High School. In 1865, steamboats brought goods and passengers upriver to local businesses along the Cumberland River before being unloaded at Point Park Lake (now known as White Water Lake) downstream where they were shipped back downriver to be sold or used again. This activity continued until1868 when river traffic stopped due to flooding caused by heavy rains upstream. By 1870, most of downtown Cookeville had been built up and business had begun to take off. At this time, one of Fenton’s sons opened his own grocery store on Elm Street while another son ran an ice cream parlor on Main Street. Eventually both stores became successful and their locations remain unchanged today! Between 1880 and 1890, more than 20 churches were built in Cookeville including Methodist Episcopal Church (1881), Baptist Church (1887), Presbyterian Church (1889), Roman Catholic Parish (1890), First United Methodist Church (1892) and Second United Methodist Church (1900). Many of these churches still stand today including Christmastime services at First United MethodistChurch each year! Cookeville was founded in 1796 by General James Robertson. The town was named for General John Cooke, who fought in the American Revolution. It grew rapidly during the 1800s, and by 1810 had a population of 3,000. In 1812, Cookeville became the capital of Tennessee.
