The town's fortunes waxed and waned during the early 20th century but have started to improve since 2000 with increased development including new hotels, restaurants, retailers, office space and more recently housing developments such as Old Hickory Place subdivision which replaced an abandoned cotton plantation thatonce housed vast amounts of coal dust while being used as a munitions storage depot during World War II. Cookeville is a small town in Tennessee, located just west of Memphis. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Cookeville was chartered on December 3, 1818 by General James Wilkinson as the capital of Jackson County. It became an incorporated municipality in 1907 and consolidated with other local municipalities in 1938. Cookeville is named after Colonel John Cooke, who fought in the Mexican–American War and against Native Americans at Battle of San Jacinto. The first white settlement in what is now Cookeville was founded about 1788 by Captain John Sevier and his party from Georgia. They traveled downriver to what is now Memphis and established a trading post there before returning upriver to found their new colony. The area that would become Cookeville was originally called Cedar Grove because of the abundance of cedar trees which were so valuable for building boards. In 1818, General James Wilkinson requested Congress create Jackson County out of parts of four northern Tennessee counties which had been won during the war with Mexico. On December 3, 1818, Governor Nicholas Trimble approved this request and appointed Colonel John Cooke as its first governor. Colonel Cooke moved his family to the new county seat of Memphis on July 2, 1819 where he began construction on a courthouse and jail complex that still stands today (now part of United States Court House). He also developed land within present-day Cookeville for farming purposes which bisected what would later become Main Street. Cookeville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,849 at the 2010 census. Cookeville is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The first man to settle in Cookeville was James Hance and his family who arrived in 1812. In 1815, John Sevier founded Sevier and Company which built the first school in Cookeville. There were also several farmers that settled here during this time including Wiley Easley, Amos Kendall and Elijah Blair. In 1817, Daniel Boone moved his family from Virginia to Williamson County in order to start a new life and homestead on the Jemison Fork of the Cumberland River. He named his farm "Boone's Station." Here he started to cultivate land and raise cattle for wool production. This early settlers were some of the most active members of local churches throughout their time here. They donated land to various denominations as well as helped organize local schools and community events such as dances and picnics. The town of Cookeville began to form around this time with its own businesses and residents starting businesses within their homes or taking advantage of the natural resources available here such as coalitions waterfalls (now part of Gatlinburg), timberlands (now part of Pigeon Forge) and hunting grounds (today known as Lookout Mountain). Coal mining began arriving into Cookeville beginning in earnest during this time with companies like Gadsden & Green coming ashore just south of town for supplies during the American Civil War efforts on shorelines all along Tennessee's coastlines – something that continues up until present day via truckers bringing coal into our state daily! As business boomed within Cookeville over these years things started happening outside too – many people decided they wanted to move away from big city lifestyles heading out towards more rural lifestyles when opportunity presented itself back home! With so much going on here already it wasn't long before downtown Cookeville acquired a bit more notoriety for being home to one heckuva lively nightlife scene called "The Strip" which saw locals downing drinks all night long while watching live shows outdoors before getting ready for bed! It was definitely an edge not having anywhere else really- especially if you loved your freedom!
