The town is named after General Andrew Jackson, who Battle of Horseshoe Bend fought in 1794 at the behest of the local Indian tribe. The first settlers to Cookeville were farmers who arrived in 1819 from Kentucky. By 1830, there were twenty-four families living in Cookeville. The first school was built that year and served grades one through five. In 1832, the first post office was established in Cookeville. In 1840, the first store was built and operated by Captain John Gentry until it burned down two years later. The first Baptist church was also built that year and served as the town's main meeting place for religious activities until it burned down in 1865. In 1867, the railroad came through town and began transporting goods to Memphis across the Tennessee River on barges; this led to an increase in population and development within the town boundaries over time. A cotton gin became operational in 1870 which led to an increase in crop production within Cookeville while also creating jobs for locals during World War I (WWI). Cookeville is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,695 at the 2010 census. Cookeville is located on the Cumberland River and is named after Revolutionary War General James Cooke. The first settler in what would become Cookeville was John Cook of Georgia in 1799. He and his family arrived from North Carolina and started a small farm near present-day Chattanooga. Other early settlers were David Marks (1802–1894), Elijah Zeitlin (1811–1896), Daniel Mellinger (1800–1868), Nicholas Groombridge (1786–1858), John Pritchard (flour merchant) ( 1815–1900) and Peter Wentworth (1772? – 1865). In 1819, James Aiken founded the city of Chattanooga with land he had purchased from David Marks. Aiken's venture failed but served as an inspiration for other entrepreneurs to start businesses in Chattanooga during the 1830s and 1840s. Cookeville became known as "theBirthplace of Western Tennessee" because of this success. During the American Civil War, many men living in the area volunteered to fight or serve in Confederate armies including James Aiken himself who raised 8th Tennessee Infantry Regiment under General Jubal Early and fought at Cold Harbor on January 7, 1865. The town was both destroyed by Union forces during battle damage sustained on July 3rd 1863 as well as being sacked by Union cavalry on October 6th 1863 which caused extensive damage to both buildings and infrastructure including roads; one particular road still bears this name today! Only a few lingering pieces of evidence remain from these days such as two white wrought iron gates that once led into downtown from West Main Street now stand empty next to a park across the street from where JRTC used to operate before it closed down permanently in 2001; however, it is still possible to spot some faint traces of architecture remaining within easy walking distance today! 1st Lt John Witherspoon's home can be found just east of I-24 off US-280 right off exit 101A when traveling southbound Exit 102A you will come across State Route 411 called "Witherspoon Road".
