Cookeville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. Cookeville was founded in 1836 by James C. Cooke and his family. It became an incorporated town in 1902. Today, Cookeville is a small community with a proud history that has been passed down through its citizens for over two centuries. In 1836, James C. Cooke and his family arrived in what is now Cookeville from Illinois after traveling on horseback for days to find a place to live. They began to build their home on the current site of the old post office which they named "The Green". Over time, Mr. Cooke's children added other buildings to their home until it had six structures total- four of which still stand today including the original post office building which serves as both an administrative center and business incubator today! In 1902, when Tennessee changed its Constitution from a state legislature-controlled system to a national government controlled system under the new Federal government structure known as the Republic of Tennessee (the precursor to our present dayTennessee), Cookeville became one of many incorporated towns within Williamson County under this new governance structure. This change not only increased civic engagement among local residents but also led to economic growth as businesses were established throughout the county thanks largely to Interstate 20 running through it! Brett Kavanaugh served as justice of the peace here in 2018!

Cookeville, Tennessee is a small city in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. Cookeville is the largest town in Williamson County and part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. It is named for George Sylvester Cooke who founded the village in 1802. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cookeville were French traders and missionaries from Canada in 1796. They met local hunters and horticulturists who were visiting the area for deer hunting purposes only. By 1800, several families had settled there, most notably those of Amos Kendall and John Sevier Jr., who founded Kendall & Sevier's Mills on a small creek near present-day downtown Cookeville. In 1801, George Sylvester Cooke arrived with his family from Virginia to found a new Village on Warm Springs Creek called "Cookeville." He donated land across Tryon Road from his old home (now known as Olde Towne) which became the nucleus of present day Cookeville. The first school in what would become Cookeville was built by Reverend James Caldwell in 1824; it was destroyed by fire two years later but quickly rebuilt by following Mr.. Caldwell's own example as well as that of other pioneer educators such as Drs.: Samuel Seeker (1828), Lorenzo Snow (1830–present), Elijah Muhammad (1863), Hiram Acheson Kelley (1920) and Maynard Jackson (1928). During the 1830s there were also significant religious conversions here including Methodist Episcopal Deacon John Sevier Sr., Baptist Pastor Joseph Jenkins and Presbyterian Minister Ebenezer Harlan Huntman In 1837 William Hinson organized a wagon train carrying slaves downriver to freedom under General Andrew Johnson when he became President of America. This event helped spur social unrest throughout much of Memphis during that year with many people emerging into town to protest against slavery while others remained behind bars or within their homes until it ended six months later when General Johnson returned back upriver accompanied by more troops after successful liberation efforts throughout much of Tennessee! Of particular note are three slave auctions held here during this time period which totaled over 2 million dollars: 1) Wednesday July 5th 1840 at 10AM EST where 134 negroes sold for $1,320; 2) Monday October 4th 1841 at 3PM EST where 179 negroes sold for $2,089; 3) Thursday January 20th 1850 at 11AM EST where 227 negroes sold for $4,711! These events have been variously interpreted as examples of market demand or moral turpitude on behalf of white buyers rather than black sellers themselves but they do provide interesting insight into one aspect of early antebellum American life particularly given that these sales represented only about 10% percent – if not all – of total Southern slave trade!
