This innovation was called the Ewing type choke stock. The use of gun chokes began to spread throughout America in the 1930s because of their effectiveness in reducing recoil and improving accuracy. Cookeville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin (NDM) Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cookeville is located on the Cumberland River and has a total area of 31 square miles (89 km2). The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Cookeville were English traders who landed in present-day Schertz, Texas in 1796. They named the area "Coteegee" for their homeland of England. In 1802, John Sevier moved his family from Virginia to what is now Cookeville and began trading with Native Americans. He built a cabin near where he would later sell land to General Andrew Jackson for theBattle of Horseshoe Bend on November 15, 1804. In 1819, James Ladd founded the village of Newton near present-day Cookeville while working as a surveyor for Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest. When Forrest became military governor of Tennessee in 1827, he ordered Ladd to stop trading with Cherokee Indians because they were not following treaty provisions which forbade white men from living among them without permission from the Indian government. Ladd proceeded to build a store and tavern which became known as The Plainsman Lodge and served as an early community center for residents of nearby towns such as Lebanon and Franklin. After Ladd's death in 1830, his wife continued running The Plainsman Lodge until her death in 1865; after that it was operated by their son Samuel Aikens until it closed its doors in 1978. Cookeville is the most populous city in Tennessee and the county seat of Cooke County. The population was 86,715 as of the 2010 census. It is a small town located on the Cumberland River and has been inhabited since pre-historic times. The first permanent European settlers in Cookeville arrived in 1796, when James Robertson and his family came from Scotland to purchase land on which they built a log cabin. In 1819, Cookeville became a part of the Union Territory of Kentucky after that state seceded from the United States. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded Knox County,Tennessee and captured Cookeville. The city was abandoned by Confederate forces during their retreat southward, but it continued to be used as a military supply center for much of the remainder of the war. The post office was established in 1824 and remained operational until 1840; it was renamed Clarksville in 1850. The first school opened in 1827; it was called First Presbyterian School until 1860 when it became Woodward Academy; Woodward Academy merged with Central High School (now known as UT Chattanooga) in 1938 to form Central High School/UT Chattanooga. During World War II, Cookeville served as an airfield for American troops deployed to Europe; its nickname "The Battle Ground" comes from this role.
