In Cookeville, Tennessee, the first firearms were introduced into the community in 1814. The town's first firearm store was established in 1815 and there were also several pistolsmiths who worked on rifles and pistols for local farmers. In 1850, a rifle range was opened in Cookeville and it continued to be used until 1903 when it was replaced by a baseball diamond. In 1863, an armory was built in Cookeville and it served as the town's center of operations for arms procurement and storage. A ammunition mill was also built in 1865 and it continued to produce ammo until 1908 when it closed down. In 1868, a cemetery was developed in Cookeville and it continues to be used today.
Cookeville is a city in the Chattanooga-Hamilton County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 27,819 at the 2010 census. Cookeville is the county seat of Hamilton County. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Cookeville was founded in 1811 by General John Cooke and his wife Captain Esther Hutton as a trading post on the Cumberland River near present-day Chattanooga. A small community developed around the post, initially called Easton by General Cooke and Westmoreland by Captain Hutton. In 1813, Easton was renamed Cookeville after General John C., who donated land to make it a town. The first store in Cookeville opened on December 24, 1813 under license from Colonel James Robertson of Knox County. In 1818, Congress passed an act providing for a territorial government within Tennessee; this new territory included all of what are now Chattanooga and Hamilton County (except for Cove City). On January 17, 1830, trustees selected Isaac Asahel Lewis as captain general of militia forthe proposed new government. On February 21st Lewis received from president James Kenedy an order appointing him brigadier general in addition to his other military commands; he served until 1840 when he resigned because of ill health. In 1830s and 1840s many families moved into what would become downtown Cookeville from rural areas east of Chattanooga including portions now known as Beechwood Hills and Springdale Township (now unincorporated). By 1850 most residents in downtown had left for better opportunities elsewhere in the community or for greater distances away due to increasing prices for farmland and other natural resources brought about by industrialization throughout the region during that time period

Cookeville, Tennessee is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. Cookeville is the county seat of Hardin County. Cookeville was laid out on February 14, 1827 by Nicholas Cooke and named for General James Wilkinson Cooke. It became a town on November 3, 1868, when it was consolidated with the neighboring towns of Union and Lenox. On March 16, 1907, Cookeville merged with the nearby town of Lenox to form the new city of Lenox-Conway. The first store in Cookeville was built by Nicholas Cooke in 1827 and operated until 1830. In 1835–36 John Witherspoon opened a general store and post office in present day downtown Cookeville which served as the nucleus for what would become today's commerce in this growing community - including wagon trading along the Cumberland River between Lenox and Uniontown until about 1840 when steamboats became available for transportation across the river from Nashville to Chattanooga which made trucking unnecessary except during special occasions such as holidays or major events such as Sumner’s Invasion of Kentucky (1865). A tavern called “The Gilded Cage” was built on Main Street north of present day Highland Park Shopping Center by George Washington Carver around 1865-67 as part of his effort to promote farming activity throughout Hardin County as well as provide goods necessary for everyday living such as saltpetre (a natural fertilizer) and other vegetables at low prices to helpkept farmers afloat during timesof economic hardship. A fire destroyed Carver's business in 1870 but not before he had furnished many local residents with important tools used during arson investigations at that time including an iron rod used to pry open locked chests prior to conviction.
