Cookeville is named after George Cooke, an American surveyor and politician who served as a judge in Shelby County from 1817 to 1827. The first store in town was built by John Witherspoon and his brother Captain Jonathan Witherspoon on the site of present day First Baptist Church. When he returned home, he ordered all stores closed up within two weeks so that he could confiscate supplies brought back by the army from Mexico City. The town started off as a small farming community with just a few hundred people living there when the railroad came through in 1868. By 1870, coal mining had become an important industry here and many new buildings were erected to accommodate the miners and their families. The influx of immigrants during World War I led to increased population growth which continued into the 1920s when mills began to be built for war Production such as Bendix-Hull Aircraft Company plant #2 which produced P-39 Airacobras for America’s Air Forces during World War II In 1960-1961 Cookeville experienced its largest economic boom ever with businesses opening up throughout downtown including banks (FirstTennessee Bank & Trust Company), restaurants (Dixie Chicken & Hamburgers), department stores (Macy's Department Stores) Coal production also saw significant growth with several mines openning up including Union Carbide Corporation's Plant No 3 which employed 1,500 people during this time In recent years many young people have moved into Cookeville looking for opportunities but most residents remain largely engaged with their local businesses, churches and schools
