Cookeville is a small town in the Mountain Time Zone, located in the Knox County seat of Chattanooga. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Cookeville is part of the Chattanooga–Ft. Campbell, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the Tennessee River flood plain. The first European settlers in what is now Cookeville were French colonists who landed in 1765 and began to build a trading post near present-day downtown Cookeville. By 1800, there were about 100 white people living in Cookeville. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Nashville to Chattanooga to fight against Mexican forces under Santa Anna and became President of the United States that year. When he left office in 1809, he donated land for an Agricultural College (later known as Vanderbilt University) which was founded by his brother James K. Polk in 1825. The town's name was changed from Cumberland Gap to Cookeville on February 13, 1861 when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned down part of nearby Uniontown during their campaign against Fort Donelson (this event is also celebrated as Tennessee's "43rd birthday").
