Columbia was founded in 1814 by Colonel John Sevier and his wife, patriotic woman Betsy Beall Sevier. The first settler in what would become Columbia was Captain James Robertson along with his family who arrived around 1790 from New Scotland in present-day Scotland before moving on upriver until they reached what is now Williamson County. In 1865, after the war ended, Union troops burned down the town as part of an effort to clean up Union positions across the state following the battle at Stones River. From 1865 until 1870, Columbia underwent a period of rapid growth that saw it become one of Tennessee's most important cities. In 1870, it became an independent city with its own government and school system. After years of growth and development, Columbia came to be known as one of America's "largest" cities with a population over 100,000 people.
