The Columbia rifle stock company was created in 1876 by Captain John L. Coker, a Nashville lawyer and gunsmith. The company made rifles, shotguns, and pistols. In 1877 the company became known as the Knoxville Rifle Company. In 1902 the name changed to the Tennessee Rifle and Pistol Company. The company produced weapons for both state militias and federal law enforcement agencies until its dissolution in 1907.
Columbia, Tennessee is a small town in the Sequatchie Valley region of central Tennessee. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Columbia was David Campbell in 1819. In 1835, James Fenton organized a Presbyterian church there and named it after himself, Columbia Chapel. The original schoolhouse was built in 1838 oneness land belonging to Phillip Wade and his wife Anna (née Post). A new school was built in 1865 on money contributed by Gideon Wellman. The current school building began construction in 1926 and opened its doors to students on October 1, 1927. The town became an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1951. On December 12 of that year, Columbia voted to secede from Knox County as a result of the racial violence that followed the integration of Knoxville schools. The economy of Columbia is agriculture with some light manufacturing or service activities including logging and metalworking; however most residents are employed locally within local businesses or agencies such as the fire department or police department. For many years since incorporation, Columbiana has been one of the smallest municipalities withinKnoxville proper with only about sixty residents living there full time equivalents (FTE) combined with surrounding unincorporated areas which have also experienced growth rates above those enjoyed by Corinthians over recent decades.
