Columbia is a town in Robertson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. The town was founded on November 3, 1837 by brothers Amos and Nathan Ewing as a post office on land they purchased from the Cherokee nation. The name Columbia comes from the Cherokee word "komi" meaning "place of peace." The first store in town was built by Nathaniel Bowers in 1839. The town's first school was built in 1840 by Reverends John Sutherlin and Reuben Hartsfield. In 1850, Columbia became the county seat of Robertson County after it was moved from Knoxville to this location due to population growth in that area. In 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell made his headquarters at Columbia while he prepared for an upcoming battle against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. After Ewell's defeat at Murfreesboro on October 11th, 1865, he returned to Knoxville and Columbia remained unoccupied until 1870 when it became the judicial district for Robertson County with a new courthouse being built near downtown. After Reconstruction ended in Tennessee in 1877, most black residents moved out of Davidson County or left to find work elsewhere during Reconstruction times (1868-1893). Some white residents did move into the community but soon abandoned it because many were child laborers working on local farms during those years; labor prices were high enough then that not all families could afford to move out of their homes permanently. With increasing economic competition among counties throughout Tennessee during this time period also came increased racism among some people living inside cities now referred as “inner city” areas), most whites decided that Columbia would remain an unremarkable little village surrounded only by agricultural lands which would continue to be its focus until World War II when industry began moving into the area bringing more people and more businesses (eagle Ford Aluminum Works facility being one example). However even though no large military installations were ever established within walking distance of Columbia proper during war years (the only instance where such activity occurred being around Rutherford Air Force Base just outside town limits) small numbers of soldiers rotating through nearby bases occasionally stopped short at unmarked Roadside Airstrip Hangars located off Highway 191 about 3 miles northwest of town for refueling purposes/to stay overnight before continuing their journey home each day; these airfields are still extant today thanks largely to efforts by local preservationists who have been lobbying for them since the 1980s . From 1945-1946 there was active bombing warfare taking place over central America involving British RAF Bomber Command aircraft based at RAF Coningsby near Lincolnshire; raids occurring intermittently over southern Davidson County killed approximately 100 civilians both civilian men and women ages 15-49 & children between 1½-4 years old including 5 members of my family total: my father died instantly as did my mother shortly after impact (& all 6 siblings survived); sadly much damage resulted including extensive destruction & loss of life caused by firebombing.; however much has been accomplished since then both physically & emotionally regarding public education within our community limited only to public buildings currently permitted which include 4 elementary schools: 2 middle schools: one high school: 2 Technical Schools & a single college/university.: Although many challenges remain––most notably lack thereof access to quality healthcare opportunities stemming from our rural setting––Columbia remains quietly representative today both geographically & socially speaking as one half million+ Tennesseans identifying themselves primarily with “Tennessee” rather than simply Americana
