Columbia, Tennessee is a small town in the extreme southwestern corner of the state of Tennessee. The population was 930 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1814 by refugees from Kentucky who had fled to what is now Columbia after being driven out of their home by Andrew Jackson's militia during the Indian Removal War. The settlement grew slowly but steadily over the next few decades, thanks to its location on the Cumberland River and access to water resources. In 1845, Columbia became an incorporated village under the name of "Newbern". During World War II, Columbia was one of six towns in East Tennessee that were assigned to serve as military barracks for soldiers coming through that area on their way to fight in Europe. The community continued to grow during and after World War II, with increasing numbers of civilians and military personnel moving into it. In 1957, Columbia became a municipal seat when Knox County was created. In 1967, it merged with much larger neighboring municipality called "Pine Bluff" (though there are still vestiges of Newbern culture present), forming what is now known as "Columbia-Pine Bluff". In recent years, Columbia has seen a large influx of immigrants from Latin America and Asia who have settled in its buildings and businesses. The town has also become increasingly popular for outdoor activities such as fishing and hunting; however, some residents remain concerned about potential negative effects this may have on local ecology.
