Columbia is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,493 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. Columbia is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. The first humans to live in what is now Columbia were farmers who came from Kentucky and Indiana in the eighteenth century. The land around Columbia was first inhabited by the Cherokee people and then by Caddo Indians before being sold to white men in 1803. A sawmill and gristmill were built on the James River near what is now downtown Columbia in 1807, and farming started there soon after. In 1820, James Kenedy founded an academy here that became one of Tennessee's classical schools later known as Vanderbilt University. In 1830, when Tennessee seceded from Virginia, Columbiadians voted to join Tennessee instead. This event made it possible for Nashville to annex Columbia as its new city Limits had been set only a few miles away from where the voting took place – making it effectively a separate municipality within Nashville rather than just another town within Hardin County which would have continued to be ruled by elected officials from both cities (the same situation exists today). The city limits grew rapidly due to this annexation; by 1840 they encompassed all of Hardin County except for rural areas east of Interstate 40/75 and west of I-265/I-65 outside of town limits; more than 10% of the population lived within City Limits at this point! By 1850, over 60% of all workers in Knoxville were employed within City Limits vernacular architecture began appearing throughout much of northeastern Davidson County including parts of downtownColumbia during this time period with several buildings still standing even into the present day such as Sammons’ Bank building located on what is now Waterfront Drive off Cumberland Parkway between First Street and Second Street NW (now home to Corinthian Colleges) . Columbia, Tennessee is a small town located in Rutherford County, Tennessee. The population was 1,451 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Rutherford County. Columbia was platted in 1865 by James Hance and named for Columbus, Ohio. The first post office was established in Columbia on July 2, 1865. In 1881, the Livingston Post Office was established and remain so to this day. In 1907-08, Columbia became known as the "Newburgh of the South" because its citizens helped lead the fight against slavery in that state during the Jim Crow era. The town's growth can be traced back to its location just outside Chattanooga on what is now called "Hale Road". A sawmill and grist mill were built there around 1830 by William Hance and his brother John Hance II. They used their land toraise hogs and other animals until they sold it in 1853 to Jeptha Chatham Cooke Sr., who founded Cooke & Chatham Coal Company with his son Jameson Cooke Jr.. In 1865, Jeptha Chatham Cooke Sr.'s heirs partitioned their coal interests among themselves and organized a new company under the name of James Hance National Iron Works Company Limited which manufactured locomotives for several transportation companies including Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and American Railway Company (AR). The company prospered until 1870 when a fire destroyed most of its factories in Chattanooga followed by bad economic times caused it to collapse within two years. Columbia elected a mayor in 1875 but no effective government existed until 1886 when Wm Treadwell formed an ordinance providing for municipal elections each year with one vote cast per elector on all questions submitted to voters not affecting property or internal improvements except school bonds etc.; these votes were then counted and apportioned among City Council members serving three-year terms renewable only once per term; thereafter all elections were held through general election districts provided by State law; Council meetings were open to the public with business received at least 72 hours before presentation thereof To serve on Council any person having been duly nominated by majority vote of all qualified electors residing therein at least six months prior thereto shall be entitled thereto notwithstanding any objection entertained by said Mayor or any member thereof relative to such nomination; As early as 1887 local businesses had started using electricity from kerosene lamps which made heat available during winter evenings without havingto break out windows or use open flame torches like those used today - this process was also pioneered by General Electric some years later! When America entered World War I in 1917 Columbia joined other southeastern communities as part of countrywide mobilization effort led by President Woodrow Wilson urging all Americans "to do whatever we can think necessary" for national defense purposes even though "the people here are not yet Ready for War." After WWI ended Clinton decided that returning home would be more important than continuing education opportunities so he returned fulltime to Vanderbilt University where he had been appointed interim president upon Vanderbilt's suspension from federal accreditation over tuition payments made to students attending independent colleges runby alumni association affiliates instead of trustees appointed pursuant regulation #5(a)of1915 Federal Education Act establishing Trusteeship Rules Governing Independent Colleges
In 1831, the Tennessee General Assembly passed a bill to create a new state in the south. The area that would become Columbia was donated by James Robertson, who had purchased land on the Cumberland River in what is now Lebanon County. The town of Clarksville was founded on December 12, 1831, and became the first capital of the new state. In 1837, Columbia was renamed Nashville after John Nash, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as president of Tennessee.
