Gun targets have been a part of Columbia, Tennessee for over 100 years. The Targets Company was founded in 1892 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother-in-law, Edmond Sulzberger. The Targets Company manufactured targets for use at gun shows and private shoots. From the early 1800s until the mid-19th century, target shooting was a popular pastime in this area. Gun ranges and private shoots were common in early Columbia, Tennessee. At one time there were more than 20 shooting facilities in the city. The first target guns were built by David Roberts at the corner of Congress and Market Streets in 1820. Rifle shooters from Vanderbilt University used these guns to shoot at model birds on nearby trees before rifle matches began on October 15 of that year. During World War I, Target Company president Johnnie Johnston set up shop next door to Davidson's Department Store on Mill Street between Broadway and Elm (now Bradford). Customers could buy tickets to see real live cannon fire from the store windows while they waited for their turn to shoot at target balls coming out of thenn cannons outside. Johnston also arranged for daily demonstrations of how accurate machine guns could be with his company’s rifles during the war years… [In 1915] he organized a “gun show” where two hundred antique pistols were exhibited by various exhibitors throughout central Tennessee….It was an event which attracted thousands of visitors each season….. [In 1916] Target company employees helped organize a local hunt tourney that became known as “the Tennessean Hunt”….This event involved teams from all around central Tennessee driving into Knoxville with hunting dogs to compete against each other using replica pistols made by Target company employees as shot points…..Target exhibitions continued through World War II until 1946 when all operations ceased due to wartime budget cuts…..Columbia was again hit hard by military duty during World War II when many businesses closed their doors……After the war ended, many people who had once frequented target ranges moved away or stopped Shooting altogether because it became harder and harder to find good ammunition….Many oldtarget Guns still hangs today inside some old buildings along Broadway near Elm

In 1912, Columbias first high school opened its doors after four years of construction by local farmers and businessmen who pooled their money to finance the project. Columbias current high school building was built in 1951 following a $27,000 donation from Mrs. Lillie Jernigan Edwardsinger. In 1959, Columbias first post office opened with mail service coming from Decatur until 1957 when rural residents began receiving mail through circuitous routes outside of town due to lack of available transportation options at that time.
