Columbia, Tennessee is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 2,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The first mention of Columbia was in 1796 when it was called "Columbia Place." In 1811, the name was changed to "Columbia" after General Andrew Johnson's trip to that state and its capital city in Nashville. The town site had been chosen for its strategic location on both banks of the River Cumberland and its close proximity to military installations including Fort Harrod and Fort Donelson. The development of Columbia began with the construction of a flour mill in 1825 by Major John Dickenson and his brother-in-law, Elijah Hicks. From this mill, local farmers exported their flour until 1830 when a new gristmill was built by A.P. Hilliard and Brother James Gentry. This mill produced high quality flour which became known throughout Hardin County as "Hickory Flour". In 1857, General John Cramer laid out grid streets into what is now downtown Columbia according to plans prepared by Surveying Commissioner James Hoggard. The first store opened in 1862 under license from Colonel Augustus Herron who also served as Mayor from 1865-1868 In 1870s brick buildings were erected on Main Street near present day Neely Cemetery; these were replaced by more modern structures in the early 2000s . By 1890 there were over 100 businesses operating within Columbia proper with an estimated population of 3,500 people overall Some notable citizens during this time included Judge Fenton Weaver (1890-1935), Drury Lumber Company President Wm Clements (1901-1973), Mrs. Mabel Swenson (1900-1981) and Mrs because Drury Lumber Company Vice President J B Smith (1920-.2010). After World War II many businesses closed due to lack of demand or competition from newer industries such as electronics or automobile manufacturing . However some institutions that continued operations include Baptist Bible College which moved from Columbiansville to Murfreesboro in 1957 and has remained operational ever since , Elmwood School which relocated from Murfreesboro to Clarksville in 1974 ,and Corinthian Christian University which moved from Lebanon, Tennessee to Columbia City in 1984 .Today most residents work outside their homes either through waged employment or farm production but some still reside inside the community having bought land adjacent to downtown for future expansion purposes only 1 mile away from Interstate 65 bringing rapid growth over just a few short years! Today's downtown area is home to numerous cultural attractions such as Graceland Museum/Texas State Capitol Complex/Museum Moderne de la Photographie du Royaume Français/Families Chinese Cultural Center/Lexington Presbyterian Church/Old First Baptist Church among others

In 1819, the first white man ever set foot in Tennessee was James McDowell, who explored the area as part of a survey for the United States. In 1825, two men from Kentucky named Andrew Jackson and John Sevier discovered Tennessee and claimed it for the United States. The next year, in 1829, Jackson's forces invaded Alabama in order to gain control over that state. When they reached Chattanooga, they foundries and mills already up and running. This led to an increase in trade with other states as well as development of tourism around the city. By 1830, Chattanooga had become a manufacturing center with cotton being its primary product.
