In 1903, a patent was granted to the company that would become Remington Arms, Inc. for the development of a gun light. The patent was for an “ Automatic Gun Light” and it described an ingenious device which used electricity to project an image on a screen. This device allowed shooters to see their target in darkness while also allowing them to shoot with accuracy. The automatic gun light became popular among law enforcement and military personnel, and helped improve their shooting skills. In 1934, Remington Arms introduced its own version of the automatic gun light which used lenses instead of batteries. This new design allowed shooters to aim the light at their target from any angle using only one hand, making it ideal for snipers and hunters. By the end of World War II, automatic gun lights had become standard equipment in most armies worldwide.
The first documented use of gun lights occurred in 1826 when British officer, George Stephenson, used them on a train to warn passengers of another locomotive ahead. The device became known as the “ Stephenson Signal”.

Born into slavery near Nashville in 1796, Frémont rose through the ranks of his free-state cohort during Tennessee's fight for independence from Great Britain. He joined forces with Jackson during the Civil War as part of Operation Overland and played an important role in driving enemy forces from key southern towns such as Fayetteville (now Memphis) and Corinth (now Knoxville). Afterward, Frémont returned home to become one of Tennessee's first elected officials - serving as justice commissioner and later governor - before retiring in 1875 at age 70 to focus on his new career as a railroad executive. From his earliest days as a settler in what is now Columbia County, Frémont had ambitious goals for his new community - he desired it to be "the most extensive town on our continent."
