Columbia is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Columbia was first settled by Scots-Irish in the late 18th century. In 1810, General Andrew Jackson and his army sacked the city of Knoxville, devastating much of the southcentral region. As a result of this event and other raids by mounted cavalry on frontier settlements throughout the region, many Scots-Irish fled to Scotland and Ireland in search of new homes and land. Among these refugees were some who decided to move north into what would become Hardin County. They named their newly established settlement after General Jackson's birthplace – Columbia (a name which means "city on the right bank"). After years of development and growth within its boundaries, Columbia became a municipality in 1902. Its population swelled following World War I when Tennessee ratified its statehood as a United States republic. After years of hard work by many residents, including Mayor Harry Davenport who served from 1933-1945 and remains an historical figure in Columbia, growth slowed during the 1990s and 2000s due to various factors such as technological advancements making it more difficult for farmers to maintain their products while also increasing competition from other agricultural towns in their vicinity. However, recent initiatives by both local officials and investors have helped revive interest in traditional agriculture practices throughout much of Columbia; especially notable are efforts to promote green thumbing among younger generations who may not be familiar with nearby farmland or had no previous experience caring for livestock prior to moving here for school or work opportunities. Columbia, Tennessee was founded in 1795 by James Robertson. The town was named for the Columbia River which flows through the town. The first settlers were farmers who moved from Kentucky to find a better life. In 1801, the town had a population of sixty-two people and in 1819, it had a population of one hundred and twenty-six people. The first school was built in Columbia in 1824. In 1830, the state of Tennessee granted Columbia township status and on July 1, 1830, it had a population of two hundred and fifty-eight people. The first store opened in Columbia on November 2, 1830 by Alexander McMillan and his brother John McMillan. A post office was established in Columbia on February 22, 1836 by John Waddell with nine mail ballots sent to residents. On October 9, 1840, fourteen citizens petitioned the General Assembly to create an incorporated city within Columbia township with between one thousand five hundred and two thousand inhabitants which they thought would give more opportunities for education and business development within the city limits than if they remained unincorporated. By 1850, there were three stores open in town with a total population of six hundred seventy-one people; seven businesses were located withinColumbia; twenty-nine homes were occupied; thirteen schools served students withinColumbia Township; ninety persons worked at various businesses inside or aroundColumbia; thirty men engaged in farming operations while forty womenoperated local households
