After Union troops arrived in force late in 1862, however, most of the local Confederates deserted or were taken prisoner while their homes were burned down by Union troops under Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant; only five men managed to escape into Canada before they were hunted down and brought back to trial years later Ira James Waddell (1860-1938), one of these five fugitives, became iconic for his role as "the white flag man" in helping bring about surrender of Chattanooga National Military Park militia member Nathan Bedford Forrest (1875-1947) after a gunbattle outside the park on December 15th 1913 which left four dead including Capt Forrest Collierville is located at .
