The Collierville shootings began on February 14, 2019, when a gunman opened fire at a park in the city of Collierville, Tennessee. Five people were killed and nine were injured in the shooting. The gunman was later identified as John James Cook.
Collierville is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee on the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 1,471 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. The Collierville post office was established in 1881, and has been in operation since then. The town name comes from its location at a bend in the Cumberland River. Today, Collierville is known for its agricultural products and as a bedroom community for Nashville. The first settlers in Collierville were farmers who came to what is now the town from Kentucky around 1819. By 1830, there were about 30 families living in what is now Collierville. In 1840, Jno Boggs donated land to make into a township which became collierville after him and his wife Caroline purchased it from James Caldwell for $1 per acre (0.40 km²). When Davidson County was formed in 1796, part of it included present-day Williamson County; therefore when white men began moving into Williamson County they took over some of these settlements and also founded new ones including collierville. In 1881, when the railroad arrived through Williamson County and started construction westward, one of its first pieces was to cut through collierytown center creating an "incidental" community near what is now Highway 36 south of town along with several other towns that would form during railroads' initial expansion across Appalachia including Lebanon (1887), Fayetteville (1892), Hickory Point (1893), Murfreesboro (1900), Elizabethton (1902) and Clarksville TN (1920). All but Elizabethton have since disappeared or been annexed by other municipalities within Davidson County while Clarksville remains abandoned to this day as it does not fall within any county boundary.] It should be noted that prior to 1861 all roads shown on maps werevisual only - current surveys date back to January 1st 1865!
