In 1918 Collierville became an incorporated municipality with its own City Council and mayor instead of being under the jurisdiction of Johnson County until 1954 when it merged with neighboring Chattanooga to form Collierville-Chattanooga Municipal District. Incorporation resulted in significant financial benefits for both cities as well as increased development opportunities due to funding available through a government-sponsored land program that gave away large tracts of swampy land near downtown Chattanooga for industrial use only after approval from a state board The city limits are bounded by Maury Street on the east side, Interstate 25 on the west side, US 62 on the north side, and Knox Road on the south side The population growth rate over time has been appreciable with much recent growth concentrated around downtown which has seen an increase in businesses including restaurants, movie theaters and hotels along with new construction such as two shopping malls - one known locally simply as "the mall" located off I-25 just north of downtown Opportunities for job growth have been present throughout most if not all aspects of local economy but more recently coalmining employment briefly returned following major mine closures during late 2000s
