Collierville, Tennessee is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,949 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Collierville was J.C. Brown and his family in 1876. A store and hotel were built on the site of present day McClain Elementary School in 1879 and became known as "The Olde Mill". In 1882 the colliery company began operations and by 1889 there were five blast furnaces operating in Collierville. By 1905 there were ten blast furnaces with a workforce of 3,000 men making coal for local businesses and for export to other countries. In 1916 an electric power plant was built which increased production by 100%. Coal mining ended about 1920 when new investments brought new technology such as open pit mines that allowed for less spoilage from old mine workings; this also led to a decline in demand for coal exported from Collierville until its closure around 1975 due to environmental concerns about acid mine drainage caused by underground coalmining operations nearby
In 1881, Collierville became the seat of Washington County after the county was created from part of Hamilton County. The population in 1880 was 1,624 and by 1930 it had grown to 9,919. In 1971, Washington County merged with Knox County to form Tennessee Valley Authority.
