Collierville was founded in 1892 by General John C. Smith and his wife Jane Addams. The original name for the town was "Hendersonville." The first post office in Collierville was established on December 6, 1892, and named Hendersonville after General John C. Smith's mother-in-law, Minerva Henderson. Hendersonville quickly became the most popular name for the town because it sounded like a big city (Hendersonville had a population of only 10 residents before Collierville started). When General John C. Smith died in 1893, his widow Jane took over running the town as its first female mayor. In 1916, Jane donated land to build what would become home to Eastern Tennessee State University; this university has been colloquially called "the Ladykiller". After World War II ended in 1945, much of Collierville were destroyed by firebombing raids by the United States Air Force (USAAF). The last bombing raid happened on October 3rd of that year;colliery Nos 1-3 were completely destroyed and all but one building within miles of where they stood burned down including many homes and businesses which still stand today as ruins testament to Collierville’s destruction during that time period.

Collierville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Collierville is located on the Cumberland River and has a humid subtropical climate. The first residents of what became Collierville were free people who had come to this area from Kentucky in 1819. They were called the "Cumberland Tennesseans". In 1828, the state of Tennessee purchased all of Hardin County from the Cherokee nation for $5 per acre. This purchase made Collierville an incorporated village and placed it under the jurisdiction of Hardin County. The first school in what became Collierville was built by subscription in 1835 and named "Annie's School." A gristmill was built near where Post Road now stands in 1840; it soon stopped operating because there wasn't enough flour to go around and also because it was difficult to get water to flood the land for irrigation purposes. A sawmill operated at Gadsden between 1850 and 1861; however, this mill did not produce any lumber until after 1870 when a sawmilling company was organized by John Witherspoon and named Vanderbilt Lumber & Mill Company Ltd.. The first store opened in 1876 by J C Stephenson with four barrels of oil each day being sold for $1/barrel In 1890, colliery mining began as an industry in Hardin County with two new mines opening: Crabtree's Lead Mine (now called Crabtree Caverns) onupper creek south of town limits near present-day State Route 219 bridge over Big Creek Township and Pettigrew's Lead Mine just north of town limits along Pettigrew Rd., about one mile east from present-day colliery roadsteads which were then swampy). These mines produced lead ore that was shipped downriver to Nashville for refining into lead acid batteries, gasoline tanks etcetera
