Collierville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of the Cumberland River and east of Nashville. The Collierville ZIP code (TN 66210) covers most of the community. The first people to live in what is now Collierville were Native American around 10,000 years ago. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson passed through this area as he traveled through Tennessee on his way to fight against Mexico. He called it "the place where I learned how to fight." After his victory over Mexican General Manuel de Alvarado at New Orleans in 1813, many settlers began moving into this area from various parts of Tennessee and Kentucky. In 1830, Methodist preacher Dr. Benjamin Fenton founded a church in what is now Collierville and named it after himself – Fenton Chapel or First Presbyterian Church of Collierville. The town started off as an agricultural community with wheat farming being its primary industry until the early 20th century when heavy manufacturing became established in Collierville and other areas along the Cumberland River Valley due to railroad development and new found oil wealth in those regions. Collierville is a small town located in Knox County, Tennessee. The population was 5,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Collierville was founded in 1872 by John Collier and his wife, Martha Easley Collier. In 1876, the colliery district that includes present-day Collierville was surveyed and laid out by J. H. Smith and Company. By 1880, more than 100 miners had found work here in what became one of the most successful coal mines in America at the time. The mine opened for business on May 10th of that year with a workforce of 256 men plus 24 women! Coal mining began to decline following World War I but resumed after the war thanks to new technology; however, it ceased production entirely by 1925 due to overspill from new mines opening nearby! In 1923, advances in aviation led to an increase in traffic at nearby Liberty Airfield which stimulated development along I-55 corridor; this led to increased jobs for miners as airlines needed access to coal resources close by for fueling their aircrafts! Today’s Town Square shopping center—home to such popular stores as Walmart and Sears—was built primarily because of this growth! Collierville was founded by Obadiah Collierville in 1819. The community is located in Damascus County, Tennessee, about 10 miles south of Memphis. It was named for the colliery industry which developed here. In 1830, the population of Collierville was about 100 souls. By 1860, it had grown to 1,200 residents. During the American Civil War, Collierville served as a Union depot and storehouse for munitions and supplies. The following year, Confederate General John Bate attacked Union forces at Battle of Fort Pillow near Collierville. The town was destroyed but some 600 Confederate soldiers were killed or captured here. The post office closed in 1919 but remained open as a general store until 1969 when it became a convenience store. In 2003, the building was taken down and replaced by an auto dealership which still operates there today.
