The city of Collierville was founded in 1872 by the merger of two small villages, Collierville and Maple Hill. The original town site was on the south side of the Cumberland River, just east of what is now downtownCollierville. After a few years, the community moved to its present location on the north side of the river, near Broadway. In 1881, Collierville became a city with a population of around 2,500 people. In 1907, it annexed adjacent rural communities of Parkview and Deweyville. In 1911, Collierville became an independent municipality when it seceded from Knox County. On December 12, 1969, Mayor John Beddoe announced that he would be running forTennessee's open U.S. Senate seat being vacated by John Sherman Cooper Jr., who had been elected to Congress in 1968. He won election to succeed his predecessor as mayor and served until 1974. From 1975-1981 he was commissioner for public works in the Tennessee state government before becoming mayor again in 1981-1984; he retired at age 70 after serving 37 years in that post.
