Collierville is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. Collierville was founded in 1875 by men from Lebanon, Indiana and it is named for Colonel John C. Collier, governor of Kentucky during Reconstruction. The first post office in Collierville was established on May 12, 1875, and was called Greeneville. A store and residence were built there in 1876 by J. H. Stephenson; the first schoolhouse was built there in 1880 by James Gentry and Wm Pickett. The first building that now stands as the courthouse was erected here in 1903 by Fenton Sennett with assistance from $5,000 contributed by Colonel John C.(Collier) Colvin Jr.. A cotton gin operated here until 1902 when it became an oilseed crushing plant operated by the Nashville Cotton Oil Company under the name of Swine River Plant No.; this plant continued to operate until 1961 when it closed because of modifications made to its equipment for soybean production which changed the nature of what had been a traditional cotton gin operation into an oilseed crushing plant. In 1960-61 also came about a changeover from hand-weed to machine-weed crops at this location due to advances being made towards corn ethanol production at that time; however, hand weedingcontinue to be done occasionally on specific acres throughout colliery properties through out their life as part of their agricultural heritage orchard program; additionally some experimental tillage has also been usedoccasionally since then on select acres adjacent to existing fields for increased yields of corn rather than using furrow methods only where available).
