Collierville, Tennessee is a small town located in Davidson County, Tennessee. The population was 5,287 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1857 by General James Fenton and his family. The name Collierville honor General Fenton's father-in-law, John Sledge Collier. The first post office opened in 1858 and the name changed to Collierville in 1865. In the early 21st century, many Collierville residents were employed as engineers and scientists working on various projects across Vanderbilt University's campus in Nashville. Many of these employees live now within walking distance of their work location on Vanderbilt's east side with its many cultural activities and restaurants such as Riverbend Pub & Grill and Pritchett's Pizza Place. In addition to its engineering workforce, other businesses that have thrived in this tiny town over time include a general store (established 1859), a blacksmith shop (1896), a hotel (opened 1915), four churches (1915-2007), two schools (1915-2009) - one for white students only, colliery workings which are still active today giving employment to several current residents as well as visitors during school days also providing some income for local families; a car wash; an ice cream parlor; three convenience stores - Kroger, Safeway/PepsiCo and Waffle House - all closed by 2012 but reopened since then under new ownership; current resident Tim Larkin operates one of those stores while his son Tyler manages another store open late into the night.; two Baptist churches were built 1912-1964 with additions through 1980 when they merged with neighboring Church Point to form what is known today as First Baptist Collierville (); there are also tennis courts located behind both churches which are used regularly by locals and tourists alike.; currently there is no public transportation available within or outside of town so shopping must be done either using bus routes operated by Davidson County government or taking walks from one end of town to the other.; Collierville has been home to several famous people including singers Patsy Cline, Ray Charles and Elvis Presley who all spent time here before moving on to larger towns or cities across America. Collierville is a small town in Greene County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 779 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. Collierville was founded on December 8, 1892 by Cleva and Belle Malone with the intent of providing a place for farmers to sell their produce. The name "Collierville" is derived from Italian word "colle" meaning "hill". The first post office in Collierville was established on January 1, 1893. In 1907, the railroad came through town and Collierville grew rapidly as it became an important transportation hub for the region. By 1923, when Interstate 65 bypassed Collierville and its development slowed down, the population had dwindled to 602 people. However, by 1972 there were still 262 residents living in Collierville when it became one of 20 towns targeted for closure by then-Governor Donelson because of lack of economic development potential. In 1990, $10 million was allocated to improve infrastructure in Collierville including new roads, utilities and schools. This effort helped jumpstart local businesses and lead to a resurgence in the community's economy throughout the early 21st century. Today, Collierville has developed into an attractive cultural destination with events like summer festivals and art shows held every year during July/August which attract tourists from all over Tennessee and Kentucky alike One significant colllitution between history and culture in Collinville are its many annual music festivals that bring together musicians from all over Tennessee as well as international performers like Dave Brubeck Band or Santana
The area that is now Collierville was first settled in the early 1800s. The first permanent settler was Andrew Jackson, who came to the area in 1818. Other early settlers were John Cargill and his family, who arrived in 1821. The area became part of the Tennessee Territory after it was admitted into the United States on January 6, 1796. In 1830, a group of men from Chattanooga decided to move west and settle in what is now Collierville. They named their new town after General James Wilkinson, who had fought in the American Revolution and then served as a general in Mexico City during its war with France. The town gradually grew over time and by 1856, it had a population of 350 people.
