Collierville is a town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville metropolitan area. Collierville is located on the border of Hardin and Williamson counties. The community was founded in 1879 by John Witherspoon and his brother James while they were working on a road from Chattanooga to Nashville. They called their new settlement "Collierville." In 1888, Collierville became an incorporated village when it absorbed the smaller settlements of Donelson and Pikeville. In 1906, the village changed its name to "Collierville" after General Ulysses S. Grant's home state of Illinois (now Michigan). In 1924, Collierville annexed what was then known as Grimes Township. Grimes Township had been established in 1892 by order of Governor Andrew Johnson to provide land for white residents who might settle in what would become Hardin County. The annexation made Collierville one of the few towns in Hardin County with more than one thousand residents. The first post office for Collierville opened in 1881; it closed that year due to low population growth in the townspeople' personal Handsome Hardside Gazetteer ledger book kept by John Witherspoon himself! In 1902, colliers built a small millrace about two miles east of town on Williamson Creek for water supply and storage purposes only! Today you can still see remnants of this millrace - there are several large boulders visible just above flowing creek water at mile marker 204 on Highway 129 between Knoxville and Chattanooga
