President John Quincy Adams also called Cleveland home during his presidency from 1829 to 1830 while living at nearby Athens during much of that time period because there were no other places close by that could accommodate him and his cabinet members. During Browns political career as mayor (1847–1853) and congressman (1853–1855), Cleveland developed into one of America's most important cities due in large part to its location at the crossroads for transportation routes connecting Chattanooga with Nashville and Birmingham via wagon road or railroads; as well as its ability to provide goods necessary for daily life such as flour, cottonseed oil, lumber, iron ore, saltpeter and bricks needed for construction projects all over western Tennessee including educationally significant Lockwood Academy near present day Memphis while also serving as center stage for business activities within what would become known as "The Great Western Railroad" corridor linking Chattanooga with Louisville/Jefferson City/Ft Worth across Texas through Clarksville before finally reaching Lexington/Manchester in Kentucky by way of Decatur/Muncie/Springfield Hannibal Road then westward via Perrysburg along I-65 until reaching Cincinnati—one stop short of Pittsburgh—in less than two days thanks largely to improvements made by entrepreneur Schenck Beall along I-75W which today forms most Interstate 65 corridor east off I-65 between Memphis and Indianapolis making it possible for trucks carrying goods from points east up I-65W all the way back down into Illinois without having to first go through Indiana or Illinois proper! This was not simply an isolated incident but something that constantly kept happening throughout Bealls Dayton company founded in 1909 which continues today as truck stops dotting interstate highways throughout Appalachia producing quality textiles,...

Cleveland, Tennessee was founded in 1836 by the brothers Isaac and John Cleveland. The city is located on the Ohio River, approximately 20 miles west of Memphis. Cleveland was named for General Simon Legree (1786-1868), an American Revolutionary War hero who served as a brigadier general in the army under George Washington. The Cleveland family built a successful business exporting goods from their plantation in Mississippi to England. In 1841, they married Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of " Uncle Tom's Cabin." The Browns were prominent citizens in their community and contributed significantly to its growth and development. They also endowed several colleges and universities in the town, including Cleveland State College (now University of Tennessee), which became one of the leading schools in the United States. In 1862, while fighting at Chattanooga during the Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his forces to destroy all infrastructure within range of Confederate artillery batteries – including churches and homes – so that these installations could no longer be used as military targets or command posts. This order was widely known as "The Clevelander Massacre." Many residents of Cleveland were killed or wounded as result of this actions; many others fled into hiding or took refuge with friends and family members. Afterward, many businesses closed down and some residents lost their jobs due to shortages caused by destruction wrought by Union troops. Reconstruction followed after the war ended with harsh terms imposed on African Americans who had been successfully integrated into American society during hostilities against white people. However, few African Americans chose to move away from deeply segregated southern cities such as Memphis because opportunities for economic advancement were limited there too. In 1924, when Republican Governor James Murchison won re-election over Democrat Andrew Johnson with 54% of the vote following a landslide victory over all other statewide candidates combined, he appointed him Secretary of State; a position that required Senate confirmation since it exceeded any other state government office at that time. Murchison would later become US Senator from Tennessee before becoming President George H W Bush’s first Vice President following his election in 1988).
