He named the place "Havana" after his native Havana, Cuba. In 1806 Englishman John Griggs Purchased land east of present-day Cleveland from Native Americans and called it "Grigsborough." On July 10, 1827, he donated 430 acres (1 km2) to be used as a public school district which eventually became known as Cleveland School District #1 (). In 1837 American Andrew Jackson appointed George Fenton as Deputy Commissioner for Indian Affairs for Knox County and sets up Indian trading posts near present-day Akron and other towns within this territory including Groveland (now part of Chattanooga), Tellico Hills (now part of Johnson City), Rocky Mount (now part of Johnson City), Pee Dee Island () and Canandaigua Harbor (). These posts were destroyed by General Forrest's troops during the Battle of Franklin on September 12–13,1837 which resulted in the displacementof over 2 million Creek Indians () from their homes across southeastern Tennessee (). John Sayers () entered into an agreement with General Nathan Bedford Forrest to sell him 640 acres (2 km2) adjacent to what is now downtown Detroit Lakes for $5 per acre ($40/km²). This property would become known as Nashville Ranch (), also known as Gadsden Purchase (). On May 6th 1861 Colonel Robert Elam organized operations against Confederate forces under General Braxton Bragg atMontgomery Station (), resulting in over 100 casualties including 50 dead or missing [] On February 15th 1912 Cincinnati Public Schools opened its doors with classes starting at 9:00 am local time(). This day marks one hundred years since Brownsville Municipal Schools opened its doors with classes starting at 7:00 am local time(). A plaque outside Brownsville Municipal Hall honors this event[] After World War I ended hostilities ceased between America's two major Unions - The United States Army vs The National Union Railroad - Brownsville Municipal Hall served as both an American Legion Post ()and a meeting place for farmers living along Interstate 65 who wanted access to buyers markets that extended beyondKnox County [] In 1980 local developer Don Ladd purchased Brownsvilles municipal building which housed Community Center (), civic offices (), library ()) For many years it served primarily as apartments [] In 2000 new zoning regulations changed how apartment buildings are allowed in certain areas so Don leased back Community Center() And now uses it more exclusively as office space
Cleveland was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1763. The city was named for General James Cleveland, who had fought in the American Revolution and then served as a U.S. diplomat in Europe. In 1814, Cleveland became the first U.S. president when he was elected to succeed James K. Polk after his death in office. He was re-elected twice before becoming an Ulysses S. Grant president in 1868 and 1876 (during which time he oversaw Reconstruction of the South). Cleveland is also known for creating Mackinac Island National Park and helping found Detroit (then called Ann Arbor) in 1896.
