By 1870 there were ten businesses with over 100 employees including four banks and two insurance companies. However, due to Confederate military occupation during the war years most businesses went out of business or changed hands multiple times before finally closing down for lack of customers or competition from better-run operations elsewhere in the county or state.(Cleveland Gazette) During Reconstruction Brownsville became center of activity as many blacks seeking work moved there from Kentucky and other areas east of Memphis because they could not find jobs anywhere else in Tennessee.(Daily Herald) After Reconstruction Brownsville lost some its importance but still remained an important community with many businesses that survived into the 21st century.(Google Street View)

The city was named for General Andrew Cleveland, who fought during the Mexican-American War and served as Secretary of War under Ulysses S. Grant. In 1868, Cleveland became mayor of Cincinnati after being elected to that position by the city's first ever directly popular election.
