The violence against these people continued until 1893 when they were finally suppressed by Federal troops under Colonel John McClernand. Beginning in 1901, construction began on what would become Nashville's first international airport called Vanderbilt Field (later renamedistinguished name for Aviation Hall), located just east of downtown Nashville near what is now First Baptist Church). This new airport would provide much-needed economic stimulus to Nashville during difficult times following World War I and later helped spur population growth in downtown Nashville. In 1925, the city limits were expanded further westward to include current day Highland Heights neighborhood adjacent to Cumberland River National Park
