The barracks were used by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War and were later turned into an arsenal by General George Armstrong Custer while stationed here during his campaign against Sioux Chief Crazy Horse in 1890-1891. After Union troops burned down part of Maysville Barracks in 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his headquarters here to take advantage of its strategic location overlooking Cherokee Valley Junction on State Route 601 (now Eastern Kentucky Highway 524) east of Dayton. This new headquarters lasted until October 1890 when Forrest relocated to Knoxville after being defeated by Ulysses S Grant at Baylor University near Chattanooga. In 1895, local artist Augustus Saint Vincent painted "The Battlefields" which depicted skirmishes fought between Confederate forces and Union forces around Cleveland during that year's US Civil War effort; it hangs today in Nashville's Capitol Museum District (near where Saints Vincent lived from 1892-1894). Cleveland experienced significant growth following World War II with dozens of manufacturers moving to the city from rural areas across America due to wartime production shortages brought about by Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 (). Many factories closed after 1945 but continued operations through 1946 when Detroit assumed control over manufacturing interests nationwide due to President Harry Truman's New Deal policies designed to stimulus economic recovery following World War II ().
