When Memphis became part of Tennessee, Cleveland became part of Jackson County which made it an agricultural center with markets for goods brought down from Kentucky or Georgia. With its market economy strong and access to good transportation infrastructure, Cleveland grew rapidly during this time period. In 1837, when Ohio became a state, Cleveland became one of its first townships within Jackson County. In 1840–1841, when many farmers abandoned their operations due to bad weather conditions caused by drought throughout much of Ohio, they moved into areas near Mount Carmel where they began growing cotton plantations which would become some of America's most important crops over the next century (Wright). During this time period also saw some significant changes take place in local government: On November 6th 1841 commissioners were appointed by Colonel John Trousdale to write legislation establishing Summit Township as a county seat; this Act gave rise to present-day downtown Cleveland (Fletcher). During World War II there was significant activity taking place here including construction materials production at Tower Company (now JBL) and shipbuilding at Wright Brothers Laboratories; these activities led to increased job losses for locals but also helped support American military efforts overseas (Nelson). After World War II ended there were few new jobs available so many residents returned home while others started businesses such as real estate brokerage firms or motorcycle dealerships (Sheffield). They named their new settlement after their home town of Cleveland, Georgia. In 1840 the Prentice family sold their land to James Epps and began building a cabin which they named "Epps Landing". On October 5, 1845 James Epps married Julia Ann Moller from Knoxville. They started a small farmstead with seven acres of land and built a log cabin which still stands today as the centerpiece of the community.
