The history of scopes in Clarksville, Tennessee can be traced back to 1873 when a Mr. Harry A. Davenport donated a pair of 4x eyepieces to the Methodist Church in the town. The first scopes used in Clarksville were made by local maker J.C. Nichols and Company and were called the “Hartman” model. In 1896, Mr. Frank Wills purchased the Nichols company and began producing his own line of scopes known as the “Wills-Hansen” models. Many of these early scopes still use 4x magnification with a bore size of .25 inches or less and are considered classic hunting riflescope designs today! In 1907, Mr. Willis moved his business from its original location on Elm Street to what is now Main Street in Clarksville, making it one of the first businesses in town to undergo such an expansion! By 1912, Mr. Willis had established himself as one of the leading dealers in optics products in the area and was able to offer customers a wide variety of new rifle scope designs including 2-3X power options as well as various spotting scopes for target shooting and birdwatching! During this time, he also designed and built his own Caldwell scope factory which remains operational today! In 1921, following World War I service members return home from overseas, demand for optics products increased exponentially due to newly discovered world markets! To meet this growing demand, Major C B Willumsen founded Willumsen Optics Corporation (WOC) – one of Nashville’s first optical companies! Clarksville is a city in Davidson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. Clarksville is two miles (3 km) east of Knoxville and four miles (6 km) west of Chattanooga. It is the county seat of Davidson County. The first people to settle in Clarksville were the Nacoochee and Peachtree River Indians. The town was platted in 1837 by John A. Browning and named for General Andrew Jackson's nephew, James Caldwell Clark. In 1848, Clarksville became part of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After the war, it regained its Union status but lost its independence again when Tennessee seceded from the Union on November 1, 1863. In 1865, General Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased all of what is now Nashville from Secretary of State James Kenedy for $5 million dollars as part of his plan to establish an Atlanta-based slave trade empire called "Fortress Nashville". He renamed it "NashVILLE" and began importing slaves there from Africa via steamboats anchored off Memphis until he was discovered by local abolitionists who managed to bring him to justice before his death in 1871. The city's economy changed dramatically after World War II when Appalachian industries such as coal mining and aluminum manufacturing gave way to new technology like television production and automobile manufacture which helped Clarksville become one of the most industrialized cities inTennessee during that time period In 1960s Clarksville experienced a slow decline due largely to outmigration among rural Tennesseans towards larger metropolitan areas such as Knoxville and Tennessee Valley Towns while downtown experienced rapid redevelopment which contributed much to its current state However over recent years Downtown Clarksvil
