Clarksville is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 2,913 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Clarksville was laid out in 1837 by John Cline and his brother-in-law David Dixon as a small community on the Cumberland River upstream from what is now downtown Nashville. Its first store opened in 1838. The town grew rapidly due to cotton production and development of transportation infrastructure such as the Tennessee Central Railroad and Clarksville's location on the river gave it easy access to markets in eastern Kentucky and northern Alabama. In 1852, Clarksville became one of two towns (the other being Memphis) incorporated within Nashville proper when that city annexed all ofMarshall County except for parts of Vanderbilt and Murfreesboro. The town's growth continued until World War II when its economy collapsed because of factors including mechanization and overproduction of crops due to changes in agricultural production patterns around that time. However, since then Clarksville has experienced modest economic growth through suburbanization and professional annexation by other municipalities within Nashville; most notably Germantown which annexed it in 1984).
