Over time, Clarkstown grew larger and more diverse than just a farming community; it enjoyed strong cultural ties to nearby Memphis and developed into an important center for music, art, politics, and education during Reconstruction Era Tennessee growth period (1865-1875). During this time period*, Clarksville experienced significant growth both economically* and physically* due to its location along fertile river bottomlands that provided ample sunlight *and* grazing land for livestock*. This led to increased production of crops such as cotton*, tobacco*, honey*, corn*, potatoes*, etc.* which helped support local farms while also supporting new settlers moving into what would become Clarksville from all over Alabama *. One result of this growth was increased development around Town Square - today known as downtown - which began becoming increasingly commercialized beginning around 1870*. Banks/firms began opening up throughout town square - including two banks that still remain prominent today: First National Bank & Trust Company (founded 1865) *and* Peoples National Bank & Trust Company (founded 1924). These establishments quickly became well-known among residents for their high quality service (*as well as their lack of affiliation with any major banking institutions*)*. Due largely to these factors(*), Clarkstown rapidly regained its former prosperity by 1900; however, it would not reach its former level until after World War II when dramatic changes took place within both Memphis' economy (*and* society*) brought about increasing job opportunities (*among other things*) within newly reopened areas such as downtown *and* outside of town squares*. In recent times(*], much has been done to update or improveupon aspects of downtown *including demolishing some older buildings*: including bringing back classic architecture such as Old Greek Revivalasonry buildings located near Main Street *and* constructing modernist / contemporary architecture like The Pyramid building across from Riverside Park.* However, much work still needs to be done before Downtown can truly regain its former vibrancy!
