Clarksville is a city in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census[2]. Clarksville is the county seat of Hardin County. Clarksville was founded by pioneers in 1819. It became an incorporated town in 1881. It lost its incorporated status in 1951 but regained it in 1963 when the state of Tennessee repealed its incorporation laws and made it a city.[3] The first settler in Clarksville was James Cloyd, who arrived on horseback from Kentucky on July 4, 1819. He named his new settlement after General Andrew Jackson and his unit of cavalry known as the "Old Hickory Boys." The area that would later become Clarksville had been part of West Tennessee until 1796 when East Tennessee was won by the British during the War for Independence. In 1799, Englishman Edmund Catesby granted land to John Sevier and others nearpresent-day Clarksville for a mill site called "Catherine's Mill". This location proved too difficult to work and so Sevier sold his land back to Catesby in 1800. In 1801, surveyor John Wilkinson surveyed a road from Nashville to Knoxvillle which led through Catherine's Mill Site. On July 4, 1802,[4] Claiborne Fenton opened what would eventually be called Fenton’s Store at present day downtown Clarksville. At this time there were only two stores open within ten miles (16 km) of where we now stand: one owned by Claiborne Fenton and another by Drury & Co., both located northeast of present day downtown Clarksville on what is now Third Street.[5][6] On October 5,1802,[7] Fenton organized what would become the first Masonic Lodge in Hardin County when he erected a building at Fourth Street and Vine Avenue known as “Fenton’s Temple” or simply as “The temple”; this building still stands today adjacent to First Baptist Church on Third Street between Vine Avenue and Main Street near current day Cornerstone Coffee House).[8][9] In 1803,[10][11] Prentice McDowell established a sawmill here which became one of largest mills west of the Alleghenies River before it closed operations around 1840 due to competition from larger mills east of that river. By 1850 there were over 20 businesses operating within five blocks (approximately 100 buildings) containing 500 employees employing 1000 residents[12]. Downtown business owners such as Gorman & Smith began purchasing lots surrounding their establishments directly opposite each other along Third Street beginning about 1840 until 1865 when most business districts turned into residential areas withilitarian public housing having replaced streetlights during this time period [13]: Bryson & Harrison built approximately 100 homes across three blocks southwest/northwest of their establishment from 1850-1862 including home #1 on Second Street today known as Bryson House[14], Loftus house #2 across Commerce Drive NE between Seventh Avenue NE and Eighth Avenue NE currently used for office space by Davidson College[15], Pease house #3 across Eighth Avenue NE currently used for storage north side next door to store front minutes ago undergoing renovation[16], McClendon house #4 across Ninth Avenue NE presently used for single family Residence operated jointly by City Councilmember Brent Welder(D), Mayor Tom Hicks (R)[17], Melvin Hudson (D)[18], Wanda Brownell (D)[19],[20],[21],[22]; all these houses are significant historically because they are examples Federal Style Nationalist architecture which characterized many early 19th century American cities like Cincinnatiicularly during periods such as this one marked by rapid industrial growth particularly following inexpensive cotton production during Pomeroy's Gentleman's Agreement Period 1830-35
