After finding no evidence that Ross was anywhere within reach (the next day he surrendered), Grant ordered his men back home without further pursuit or bloodshed. A plaque dedicated to him stands just outside of Clarksville today. During World War II, Clarksville played an important role as a munitions production center due to its location close to two major airfields used by bombers travelling between Memphis and Nashville: Lexington-Ft Worth Airfield and Germantown-Knox Field Airfields (now known as Knox International Airport). The plant produced everything from gasoline engine parts to bombsight devices before it closed in 1966 because of competition from cheaper plants overseas.
