Clarksville, Tennessee is located in the state of Tennessee and has been around since 1847. The city was founded by three brothers, James, John and Christopher Clarks. In 1847, Clarksville became a town and was the first municipality in what is now Tennessee. The town had a population of about 100 people and it functioned as a small village until 1870 when it became an incorporated municipality. Clarksville remained an unincorporated community until 1924 when it became a city with a population of over 1,000 people. The history of Clarksville begins with its founder, James Clark Sr., who arrived in1847 from Scotland. He purchased some land in what is now Clifton Heights on the Cumberland River for $2 per acre. By 1850, he had built two homes: one on the east side of the river and one on the west side. James Clark Jr., who was also born in 1847, soon after bought additional land at that location which he used to build his home still standing today: 2 blocks north-west of present day First National Bank building on Germantown Road between Third Street and Fourth Street (later Seventh Avenue). In addition to his home on Germantown Road, JamesClark Sr. also operated several businesses including a restaurant called The Bluegrass & Cumberland House which served travelers passing through Clarksville during their journey downriver to Chattanooga or northern Kentucky; blacksmithing shops; wagon workshops; and corn cribs for farming purposes among others. According to local historian Dragan Vujovicic, “James Clark Sr.'s business empire spanned multiple industries including restaurants (The Bluegrass & Cumberland House), blacksmithing shops (One Hundred Acres), wagon workshops (Noah's Ark Wagon Workshop), corn cribs for farming purposes (Cable Mill), grocery stores (Gaelic Grocery Store) – all within walking distance of each other’." Also Important To Clarksville's Early History Was Its Relationship With Knox County And Other Southern counties Which Gave It A certain Rarity In Appalachian Towns While Being Open To All Races giving It A Non Ethnicity Factor That Made It Stand Out From Other Towns In This Area’ Todayclarksvillesensity stands at over 1 million people making it one of most populous cities in Tennessee
Clarksville was founded in 1795 by Captain James Robertson and his family. The area around Clarksville became a part of the Tennessee Territory in 1809. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson moved the United States Military Academy from West Point to Clarksville and it is now known as "The University of Tennessee".
