Clarksville, Tennessee was founded in 1796 by the brothers James and David Clarks. The town was named for Colonel John ClARKS, who had acquired the land in 1793. The Clarksons were a slaveholding family that operated a cotton plantation until their emancipation in 1865. The population of Clarksville increased steadily from its initial population of around 100 residents in 1812 to over 2,000 by 1860. In 1881, Clarksville became an incorporated city with a population of over 5,000 people. After being annexed by Nashville in 1907, Clarksville experienced rapid growth under Mayor John HICKERSON and City Councilmember JOE LEEBENHOFF. By 1960, the city had reached its current size with a total population of 20,000 people. Despite various economic setbacks during the 1970s and 1980s – most notably during the Nashville floods which destroyed much of downtown – recent progress has seen Clarksville increase its skyline designation to one of America’s top 10 cities for livability according to Forbes Magazine.
