Clarksville is a city in Middle Tennessee, United States. The population was 36,871 at the 2010 census. Clarksville is the county seat of Hardin County. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. Clarksville was founded in 1819 by General Andrew Jackson as a military post on the Cumberland River, and became a town in 1834. The city limits were expanded to include present-day Henderson County in 1865. Clarksville was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1870, and annexed Henderson County on January 1, 1907. The name "Clarksville" originated from General Andrew Jackson's decision to place cannons along the banks of the Cumberland River so that he could defend it against possible Indian attack during his presidential campaign against James K. Polk. In 1892, Anson Pemberton developed what would become known as Pemberton Park and built many homes there for himself and his wealthy friends such as businessman George Vanderbilt and industrialist John Dickson Clark; however, most residents abandoned their homes after World War I because of high taxes levied by Knox County leaders to finance an enlarged army being raised for World War I The first post office opened in Clarksville on December 5, 1819 under the name of Newbern's Ferry (named for Captain William Newbern). By 1830, when federal troops burned down much of downtown Nashville during raids designed to terrorize civilians into supporting President James K. Polk's re-election campaign, Colonel David Dunham erected a new brick building at Second Street and High streets which served as Post Office until 1861 when it moved across Broadstreeter Avenue to its current site at Main Street and State Highway 151 (now Veterans Boulevard). On February 14th1865 all towns within Hardin County consolidated into one entity with Clarksville becoming its legal permanent capital In 1892 Pemberton developed what would become known as Pemberton Park which included many homes for himself and his wealthy friends such as businessman George Vanderbilt and industrialist John Dickson Clark; however most residents abandoned their homes after World War I because of high taxes levied by Knox County leaders to finance an enlarged army being raised for World War I In 1924–25 a new civic center was built adjacent to Gadsden Mall (then called Gadsden Center) which served not only as a local government center but also hosted several summer concerts by country music artists such as Hank Williams Jr., Willie Dixon etc.; this facility still stands today albeit smaller than when it first opened During WWII many businesses closed due to difficulties obtaining necessary wartime materials like soldiers' clothing or gasoline; however some managed to stay open including J&J Meatpackers where managers conducted business even while their facilities were turned intoacks while other stores looted or burned On October 25th 1955 Mayor Floyd Binkley announced plans for an inner ring road system encircling Nashville that would eventually be named First Avenue Drive following approval from both houses of the Tennessee Legislature; this project was approved without objection on November 6th 1955 On January 1st 1907 HendersonCounty merged with Clarksville creating one municipality with total population over 36000
