Clarksville, Tennessee has been a center for firearms culture and history for many years. The town was founded in 1796 as a location for the military academy of West Point. From there, guns were bought and sold until the early 1800s when gun control laws began to be passed in the United States. The first area where pistols were manufactured in Clarksville were by Joshua Henschel and John Stevens. In 1806, Major General James Wilkinson discovered heavy lead ore near Clarksville and decided to open a mine here. By 1827, Henderson & Company had become one of the largest handgun manufacturers in America. This company made revolvers (including semi-automatic pistols) as well as rifles, shotguns, grenades, mortars, cannons, etc., all using revolver ammunition. In 1868 Colonel John Neely established Neely's Gunsmithing School which specialized in firearm work includingsmithing and repair services for both handguns and rifles. Today this school still exists providing high-quality firearm services to civilians and law enforcement officials alike! In 1840 Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased land east of Clarksville on what is now Highway 61 which he called "The Forrest Estate". This property served as his personal hunting ground and also acted as headquarters for his Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After the war ended in 1865, General Forrest moved his Headquarters from Nashville to "The Forrest Estate" where he continued to use it until his death in 1901. The first stores in Clarksville were established by John Dickson in 1827 and he operated them until 1830. By 1840, there were six stores in Clarksville with total sales of $250 dollars per week. By 1850, there were twenty-one stores with total sales of $2 million per year. In 1861, the first school was built in Clarksville; it was called High School No. 2 because it had no classrooms and only served as a storage building for local farmers’ crops while they waited for transportation to take their goods to Nashville or Memphis for export shipment. In 1865–1866, skirmishes took place between Confederate forces loyal to Jefferson Davis and Union forces commanded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest during the American Civil War while Colonel Mclntyre resided nearby at Hillsboro Station on the Cumberland River near what is now downtown Knoxvill
