The town was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from Virginia who arrived on horseback. The name Clarksville comes from Colonel John Cloyd's estate, which lay near the present-day junction of U.S. Routes 11 and 24. In 1819, General James Wilkinson named his plantation "Clarksville" after himself and his brother-in-law Thomas Lynch Cloyd II, Jr., both members of the Cherokee Nation living in Alabama before they migrated to Sumner County with their families. From this property, General Wilkinson developed one of Nashville's most important plantations – he raised corn, cotton, oak timber and livestock for export to England or France. In 1837, Clarksville became an incorporated village when it was chosen as the site for what would become University of Memphis (now known as Middle Tennessee State University). At that time only men were allowed to vote; women first gained voting rights in 1917.
