In 1846 Clarensville became an incorporated village when most of Hardin County seceded to form Texas during the Mexican-American War; however some residents kept their ties to Clarksville through incorporation into other villages such as Carthage (1847) and Terre Haute (1851). In 1901, Clarence King – one half of country music pioneer Charley Patton and brother-in-law of Sam Cooke – began producing recordings at his studio on First Avenue in downtown Clarksville using a crude phonograph that could only be played back with stencils left over from waxing records dating back to the 1800s. By 1903 TV star Loretta Young had her own show filmed in downtown Clarksville; this helped bring attention to the city which saw steady growth throughout the 1920s and 1930s thanks in part to its status as an important transportation hub between Nashville and Memphis due primarily to its strategic location near US Highway 24(now I-565). By 1940 industry had slowed but not stopped; during World War II many servicemen were assigned nearby camps so much so that Knox Valley High School became available for use as military recruiting headquarters (it still remains used today).
