After Removal from Georgia in 1823, many Cherokees moved to central and northern Alabama where they continued to live until 1830 when they were forced to leave again due to open conflict with state government officials over land claims and other issues On July 15, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces attacked Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River near present day Chattanooga while Union forces were besieging Missionary Ridge east of town. Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered his troops to storm Fort Donelson which resulted in more than 350 casualties on both sides including 50 killed or scalped within minutes of each other according as reported by historian James Mosely: "The fortifications at Donelson had been hastily constructed without proper bombproofs or embrasures; they collapsed immediately under fire from a strong redoubt erected inside." This attack destroyed much of Fort Donelson within an hour and helped lead to Confederate victory at Missionary Ridge that same day. Although Chattanoogan historians generally agree that cotton production played no role whatsoever in driving early settlers away from their homes during this time period (the so-called "Great Migration"), cultural associations with Mobile have persisted throughout most of history;Nevertheless, Chattanoogan residents did not return full-time to their pre-war occupations until about 1865 when railroads arrived and transportation became more available outside of Mobile Bayou country
