Chattanooga, Tennessee is a city in the southwestern United States. The population was 853,912 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hamilton County. Chattanooga is one of fourteen municipalities in Tennessee that are part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area and it has a population of 631,821 as of 2017. The city began to form on the east side of what is now downtown Chattanooga when humans first settled there in the late Woodland period around 12,000 BC. The earliest known reference to Chattanoogan comes from an ancient Indian map dating back to 1775 AD which shows a village called Chattooga on "the neck of this mountain". In 1802, General James Wilkinson gave directions for founding a town at what is now downtown Chattanooga after his victory at Battle Creek against Native Americans commanded by Chief Rossouwuhk. The town was founded on November 3, 1802 by citizens of Marietta and adjacent townships under charter granted by Governor Isaac Brockman. On December 1, 1802, Mayor John Pemberton dedicated the first courthouse cornerstone with Reverend James Murchison officiating. In 1804–1805, construction began on Fort Donelson which served as our nation's first military garrison in Chattanooga. During World War I (1914-1918), many industries were brought to Chattanooga thanks to federal government contracts such as those associated with munitions manufacturing plants like Bristol-Myers Squibb and DuPont; shipbuilding including Thomson-Houston; radio production including Westinghouse Radio Corporation and Bell Telephone Laboratories; engineering works such as GE Aviation Products Company; and agricultural products including Coca Cola Bottling Works Incorporated. One hundred thousand men served in World War I out of a total population of 625,000 in Tennessee! After World War I ended hostilities ceased all activity at Fort Donelson except for occasional concerts held inside where troops danced while still wearing uniforms! By 1920 nearly all these businesses had either closed or moved out when post-war restrictions caused tariffs on imported items reinstated! However some have returned over time like Alcoa Aluminum smelters which reopened in 2000 just north of downtown after being closed since 1984 due to air quality concerns! This later led to development along Main Street between Broadhurst Avenue and Lenox Avenue with many new apartment buildings being built during this time especially near Lookout Mountain Boulevard/Mountain View Drive running parallel to US Highway 65/Duke highway (now State Route 165). During 1957 through 1960 more than 100 large box stores opened up throughout central Tennessee followed by other retailers such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Stores Ltd., Kmart Inc., Baptist Outfitting Store etc... during ensuing decades most Chitchenhams gradually disappeared although several remain extant today (e.g – Savoy Place Hotel) making it one among largest concentrations of contiguous urbanvillages within any U S state located outside major metropolitan areas
