Chattanooga is known for its natural gas reserves,Shipbuilding industry, and world-renowned MOCA art galleries. In early 20th century Chattanooga was a small stop on the railroads between Nashville and Atlanta. There were only a few dozen residents in 1906 when Chattanoogan photographer John Davenport set up his camera store in what is now downtown Chattanooga. Davenport photographed much of the American South during this time and his photographs helped to create a new identity for Chattanooga which remains todayone of America's most vibrant cities. The city was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1817 as an agricultural community named Rossville on the site of present day Knoxville. The name "Chattanooga" originated from an Indian word meaning "place where water could be found." The first settler to arrive in what would become Chattanooga was James Witherspoon who built a cabin on land he purchased nearKnoxville's current site in 1819. Witherspoon named his farm "Winnsboro". By 1825, more than sixty families had moved to Winnsboro from all over Tennessee including Knoxville and Charlotte. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson became President of United States and ordered all Native American tribes removed from Tennessee except those living east of the Mississippi River. This order led to many farms being abandoned along the East TN Railroad because their owners could not find work elsewhere after their properties were confiscated without compensation or legal process (the Cherokee case is still one of history's most disputed issues). One such abandoned farm was called Winnsboro which became known as "Chattanooga". During this time period there were only two schools operating within town limits: Douglass Academy (later Douglass University) located at 10 Elliot Street NW while Presbyterian School located at 214 E Market Street served children from both denominations until it closed around 1870 due to financial troubles; however, Presbyterians continued to operate church services until 1865 when they sold their building back toDouglas Academy students; also during this time period two churches – First Baptist Church at 417 Elm Street SW (now part of Christmastown Presbyterian Church)and Methodist Episcopal Church at 419 Elm Street SW – were constructed with support from local business people looking to keep religion out of public life until they too closed down around 1910 due to lackadaisical behavior by some members/leaders resulting in neglect by others This abandonment hastened Chattanoogan's demise as well as that of other nearby towns such as Lynnwood & Smyrna which experienced even greater declines followed by continuous decline throughout much Southeast Tennessee following Reconstruction causing large numbers Of Tennesseans eventually dying out Poverty rates increased significantly leading youths like myself during these years into crime so pervasive I shudder everytime I think about it now days+ Some may say our country has become too soft since then but I tell you something happened while we slept+ A lot has changed since then! With technology we can now see through these shadows+ But how do we get things right again? How do we make sure that our young men & women don't fall victim again? The creation of Chattahoochee Valley Railroad allowed farmers to reach markets east and west of Nashville through what is today Chattanooga while also opening up new opportunities for industry including cotton mills and coal mines. In 1865–1867 during Reconstruction efforts by President Abraham Lincoln following the American Civil War, Chattanooga Mayor George Hines led a boycott against southern white businesses because they supported slavery instead thereof as he believed that such firms played a role in contributing to South Carolina's success economically during that period known as "The Abolitionist Movement." In 1870 construction began on First Baptist Church located at Broad Street between Vine and Fifth Streets – one of several churches built during this time with gifts from local citizens or private donors looking to promote religious pluralism in an era where denominational control over religion had become increasingly pervasive across North America. By 1887 Chattanooga had become an official seaport with its own Navy Yard (later Naval Air Station) completed just south off Broad Street near current-day Powell Boulevard. When federal funds became available for building projects after World War II along with increasing industrial production within Greater Chattanooga area due to advances in transportation technology such as air travel/the internet/cellular phone service etc., downtown development proceeded quickly resulting in many high-rise buildings becoming prevalent along Broad Street downtown corridor between Main Street northward and Pritchard Avenue eastward while much lower-density development occurred primarily around Hillsborough Avenue southward continuing into present day District Heights neighborhood. Today commercial areas located around Middle Tennessee Avenue between Second Avenue eastward and Lamar Road continue to be home to some major companies such as FedEx Corporation (headquarters), Coca Cola Co., Nissan Motor Company etc., while more residential areas have been developed closer to streetcar lines running through downtown including District Heights neighborhood southwest corner Third Street/Highway 67.

During World War II Chattanooga became an important port for military shipping with its newly constructed naval air station adding importance given then-nascent jet aviation capability however heavy bombardments throughout 1945 destroyed most facilities used by naval forces personnel until replaced postwar by nearby Mays Landing Naval Air Station which saw increased activity related both militarily and commercially during this time

Chattanooga, Tennessee was founded by the Cherokee in 1795. The city was designated as a federal district in 1837 and became an incorporated town in 1908. In 1915 Chattanooga hosted the first international air show at the airport. In 1932, Chattanooga played host to the world's third annual International Exposition known as World's Fair of 1933.
