In the 1840s, Chattanooga was a small frontier town in Tennessee. The town was founded by James Robertson and his family on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The city is named after General Andrew Jackson, who died in 1845 at the age of 52 years old. In 1853, Chattanooga became an incorporated municipality and began to grow as a trade center for farmers and traders along the Cumberland River. After a fire destroyed much of downtown in 1865, Mayor John Bellamy established a system of roofed alleys to protect citizens from fires that often plagued smaller towns in the area. During World War II, Chattanooga was one of six U.S. cities selected to participate in the Manhattan Project responsible for building atomic bombs. Because its location made it vulnerable to air bombing during wartime, Mayor Bellamy ordered City Hall be built with underground shelters that could withstand bomb damage. After military victory over Japan ended World War II, Chattanooga returned to normalcy and began expanding its economy through various industrial endeavors such as manufacturing automobiles and engineering supplies. Today, there are numerous businesses located throughout downtown Chattanooga which continue to thrive thanks to its strong economic climate and thriving community spirit. As part of peace negotiations ending that war, President George Washington awarded Hamilton County to Georgia on May 14, 1797 as part of Treaty of Paris following victory over France at Yorktown. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson invaded Georgia and defeated Creek Indians at Battle of Horseshoe Bend before moving south along the Cumberland River to take Mobile Bay from French presences there.
